When is the last time you checked copyright?

Something which I have always seen, is that "C" symbol. However, I am guilty of often overlooking what it really encompasses. Through my recent technology course, I  learned about copyright. What really stood out to me is that it is an international phenomenon. Original work is protected by laws in both North America, and other countries around the world. This reinforces the importance of always obtaining permission for work, despite where you are.

An example of something which would be very valuable to teach students would be the four types of copyright which have been established by Creative Commons. It would be beneficial to understand the six licenses so you understand what you can, or can’t do with different work. Additionally, students should recognize that the work they create is protected by copyright. Students are often very creative individuals who produce their own essays, recording, pieces of art, etc. They should understand the underlying legalities of this. I believe that teachers should be responsible for educating their students about copyright, and supporting them in being digitally conscientious users.

Furthermore: going forward with my genius hour project, I will be much more cautious about being respectful to the work of others.
